This summer I had the opportunity to participate in the Cellular and Molecular Biology of Stress REU at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Throughout the summer I worked in Dr. Tricia Kiley’s Biomolecular Chemistry lab, sponsored by the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center where I was mentored by Tessa Hoffman.
Being an undergraduate researcher was an incredible learning experience that I’ll use as a foundation for future growth. My research focused on optimizing the methylerythritol-4-phosphate (MEP) pathway within the bacteria Zymomonas mobilis, where we explored different ways to increase the essential biomolecule production of IDP and DMADP. Despite encountering some failed experiments, and long hours in the lab, my incredible mentor and lab made my experience meaningful and educational.
During my time at UW-Madison, our GLBRC cohort visited KBS and Michigan State University, where I was able to further my connections with other research students and tour the KBS campus. I also had the opportunity to experience student life on UW Madison’s campus. I relished the beautiful sunsets on Lake Mendota, eating WI fried cheese curds, and cooling off with ice cream runs to nearby Babcock.
I am deeply grateful for the connections I’ve made and the personal growth I’ve experienced as a future scientist. I look forward to applying the skills I’ve developed this summer to future lab endeavors.
