Last received his Ph.D. in 1986, from Biological Sciences, Carnegie-Mellon University. Has worked as Program Director for the National Science Foundation and Director of Discovery Genomics for Cereon Genomics. He has been awarded with Postdoctoral Mentor Award, MSU College of Natural Science in 2017 and in 2012 with the Distinguished Faculty Award, MSU. His current research focuses on using genetic, genomic and biochemical approaches to understand the regulation of biosynthetic pathways of importance to flowering plants and the animals that depend on plants for sustenance.
