TerAvest received her Ph.D. 2014, for Biological and Environmental Engineering, from Cornell University. She held the appointment of Research Associate, 2013-15, for California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on gaining a deep understanding of the diversity of respiratory electron transport chains both within and among species.
