Research associate in organic synthesis and analytical instrumentation

Organization
Position Type
Postdoc

Requirements: A Ph.D. in chemistry or relevant fields. Preference will be given to applicants with experience with organic synthesis, analytical instrumentation (GC, LC, MS/MS, and NMR), and the isolation and identification of unknown compounds from biomass derived product mixtures.

Job Duties: Postdoctoral position available in the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) to train with Steven Karlen. The GLBRC is a Bioenergy Research Centers funded by the U. S. Department of Energy. The research focuses on identification and characterization of phenolic products generated from pretreatment and deconstruction of lignocellulosic biomass. The work will require isolation of chemical compounds from highly complex mixtures and subsequently using an array of analytical instrumentation to positively identify the chemical structure. They will also be involved in the synthesis of standards to authenticate the chemical identity. Identified compounds will be passed on to collaborators for testing as carbon source or inhibitors to microbial production of liquid fuels and chemicals

Application: Applicants will be interviewed electronically and possibly in person. Applications will be reviewed immediately and be considered until the training position is filled. Applications should consist of a single pdf file that includes:

  • Cover letter that highlights past research accomplishments, how your previous experience will benefit this project, and how this research aligns with your career goals
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Names and contact information for three references

Start Date: A start date in Fall 2021 is preferred, but alternative timelines should be noted in the application.

Contact: Questions about the positions, application, and project should be sent to Steven Karlen skarlen@wisc.edu
