Hegg is a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology. He received his Ph.D. in 1996 from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and received a NSF Career Award in 2004 and the Cottrell Scholars Award in 2002. His research focuses on biosynthesis and activation of small molecules.
