iofuels can be managed either sustainably or unsustainably. In contrast, it is difficult to imagine how fossil energy systems can ever achieve desirable environmental outcomes. A Perspective piece in Environmental Science and Technology, co-authored by several GLBRC researchers and their collaborators, outlines how biofuel systems can be sustainably managed to provide important social, economic, and environmental benefits.

The article, titled "Take a Closer Look: Biofuels Can Support Environmental, Economic and Social Goals," was chosen as the cover article for the July 1st, 2014 edition of Environmental Science and Technology. Though the authors of the article have differing perspectives and expertise, but they all recognize that sustainably deployed biofuels can contribute to solving challenging problems, including food and energy security, climate change and environmental degradation caused by current agricultural and forestry practices.
