A postdoctoral research position in terrestrial biogeochemistry is available to investigate nitrogen and carbon cycling in bioenergy cropping systems. The position is part of the DOE’s Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (glbrc.org), located at the KBS Long-term Ecological Research site (lter.kbs.msu.edu) at Michigan State University’s Kellogg Biological Station (kbs.msu.edu). Preferred start date is January 2023, with application review to begin November 1.

The successful applicant will join a team investigating the sustainability of bioenergy cropping systems and landscapes, and in particular aspects of greenhouse gas fluxes and soil nitrogen and carbon dynamics. Field and laboratory-based studies of denitrification, nitrogen fixation, and soil carbon dynamics will inform life cycle assessments of alternative cropping systems and help to improve the sustainable production of cellulosic biomass for bioenergy. The position is part of the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, one of four Bioenergy Research Centers funded in by the US Department of Energy, with field sites at KBS and elsewhere in Michigan and Wisconsin. In addition to research and career development, a portion of this position (10%) is devoted to local project coordination.

We seek an excellent postdoctoral researcher to conduct microbiome research to understand the drivers and consequences of switchgrass rhizosphere communities, and to coordinate plant, fungal and bacteria-based team research activities across investigators’ labs. Strong writing abilities, wet-lab skills for generating high quality RNA and DNA from plant and microbial tissues, and quantitative skills in bioinformatics and statistics are expected. Experience in conducting field work and/or greenhouse work with plant- or soil- associated microbiomes is required.

The postdoctoral researcher will be located on the Michigan State campus (East Lansing) but will frequently travel to execute collaborative projects at Michigan State’s Kellogg Biological Station (Hickory Corners) and present the center’s microbiome results at meetings.

Required Degree: Doctorate 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • A PhD in an appropriate discipline is required, as is demonstration of strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Field experience in strongly preferred, as is experience with modern instrumentation and stable isotopes.
  • The successful applicant will have the opportunity to participate in collaborations across various labs at MSU, including microbial ecology, soil health, and micrometeorology.

Desired Qualifications:  Experience in managing, analyzing, and coordinating to collaborate using large, multi-project datasets will be viewed favorably, as well as skills in data science and experience in high-performance computing resources.
