Job Description Summary    
Conduct routine experiments; operate and maintain laboratory and analytical equipment (ion chromatograph, HPLC, etc.); gather, record, and interpret research data; order and manage laboratory inventory.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)    
1. Conduct routine laboratory experiments, operating necessary laboratory equipment, following and assisting in the development of written protocols. 
2. Acquire and maintain laboratory equipment, supplies and chemicals. 
3. Provide laboratory support to faculty and students on the proper operation of experiments. 
4. Oversee safe laboratory practices and comply with all applicable University, federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations.
5. Perform written assessment of supervised activities. 
6. Work occasional non-standard hours as required. 
7. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Supervisory Responsibilities Supervision may be exercised over undergraduate student assistants.

Required Education (minimum requirements)    
• Associate’s degree in engineering, science, or technology-related field, or a comparable level of practical work experience in a related field.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)    
• Demonstrated broad-based experience with computers, including lab data acquisition software.

Desirable Education and/or Experience    
• Bachelor’s degree in a science, technology or engineering-related field or a comparable level of practical work experience in a related field.
• Experience operating and maintaining analytical laboratory equipment (HPLC, GC, IC, etc.), including collecting and analyzing data.
• Construction and maintenance of equipment (piping, tubing, electrical wiring, reactors).
• Experience designing, conducting, and analyzing results from research and/or laboratory experiments.
• Experience drafting and following standard operating procedures and performing quality control checks on products.
• Knowledge of energy conversion processes.

• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. 
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures manuals. 
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals. 
• Demonstrated ability to solve problems and make decisions with limited supervision.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities    
• Demonstrated basic mechanical fabrication skills; electrical and electronics skills; trouble-shooting and repair of equipment.

Language, Mathematical, and/or Reasoning Skills    
• English-language fluency (reading, writing and speaking)
• Basic mathematical abilities (algebra, measurements, basic statistics)
• Basic problem solving skills

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands    
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk; sit, talk, or hear; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; and, to teach with similar movements. The employee is occasionally required to climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. 
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock, chemical hazards, equipment operating at high temperatures and pressures, and moving mechanical parts. 
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
