Research Specialist - Experimental Fermentation Lab
Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's degree required, focus in microbiology, molecular/cell biology, biochemistry, or other relevant field preferred
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
A basic understanding of microbial fermentation is required. Strong laboratory record-keeping skill, scientific communication ability, and Excel spreadsheet/data analysis skills are also required. Prior work with fermentation, microbiology techniques, and/or molecular biology techniques is strongly preferred. Candidates with prior experience utilizing lab analytical techniques (e.g., HPLC analysis, enzyme assays, etc.) will also be strongly considered.
This Research Specialist will support the Experimental Fermentation lab (EFL) in the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC), whose mission is to construct microbes for efficient conversion of plant biomass into fuels. The Research Specialist will operate bioreactors to produce biomass hydrolysates from different feedstocks, carry out comparative microbial fermentation with different hydrolysates, and perform fermentation to characterize microbial strains.
Primary duties may include but are not limited to:
-- Produce biomass hydrolysates by following standard operation protocols for fermentation and other research
-- Optimization of hydrolysis conditions for producing hydrolysates from various feedstocks
-- Microbial strain engineering to improve biofuel production
-- Preparation of growth media and microbial cultures for fermentation studies
-- Set-up and operation of batch, fed-batch, and continuous fermentations
-- Sample collection and characterization during fermentation
-- Data analysis
-- Supervision of undergraduate researchers
Successful candidates must be extremely well-organized and self-motivated; have excellent interpersonal skills; and enjoy working both independently and as part of a team. Because much of the research involves collaboration between different research groups, both experience working with multiple client groups and excellent time-management skills are encouraged.
