O Bioneers: A new course in bioenergy gets freshmen involved in real-life research challenges
It wasn’t exactly panning for gold, but a lesson in “bioprospecting,” as it’s called, had students scour the campus looking for something just as valuable: invisible forms of life that could one day be key in developing a sustainable alternative to oil.
Freshman Bioenergy Course Offered for First Time
By Amanda Voye
For the first time ever, UW-Madison’s First-Year Interest Group (FIG) program is offering a bioenergy course this fall.
Through a new partnership between the Wisconsin Bioenergy Initiative (WBI) and the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC), students in Bioenergy: Sustainability, Opportunities and Challenges are able to both see research in the field and interact with researchers in GLBRC labs.
Student Summer Course: Advanced Life Cycle Assessment
Advanced Life Cycle Assessment (3 credit, BSE875-006) is a summer 8 week term course for UW-Madison students which will begin June 14th and end August 8th (UW course number 17943). The course will cover the theory and practice of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and feature hands-on instruction with the LCA software tool GaBi (
Integrated Biological Sciences Summer Research Program-Bioenergy Group
The Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) will direct an undergraduate program at UW-Madison during the summer of 2012. This program is part of the IBS-SRP (Integrated Biological Sciences - Summer Research Program) which provides students an opportunity to conduct research as well as interact with peers in an interdisciplinary learning community. Participating undergraduate students will spend ten weeks conducting full-time research.
